This blog I wanted to write some limericks about disability to celebrate National Limerick Day. Limericks are poems that typically have 5 lines, tell a story, and have a simple rhyme scheme. Typically, the first two lines will rhyme, the third and fourth lines will rhyme, and the fifth line will rhyme with lines one and two. While most limericks tell a story about a person, with a twist at the end, I wanted to see if I could use this poetry style to share my experiences being disabled. Below, you will find three limericks. The first is about disability as a whole. The second limerick is about how autism impacts friendship. The last limerick shares how mobility challenges can impact friendships.
Here is a poem about disability
And why it is important that everybody see
The trials, tribulations, journey, and pride
And about the experiences the community has kept inside
So that everyone can learn about our right to be
Autism has made it harder to find a friend
For what I say isn’t always what I intend
I struggle to understand social cues
As a result I have felt deep in the blues
But the more I share, the more I find those with whom I don't have to pretend
My mobility is often up in the air
Sometimes the changes cause quite a scare
I never know if I can go for a hike, walk, or run
It can be hard to have to coordinate my fun
Throughout this process I am thankful for those who have shown how much they care.
